Q. How do I apply?
First, please visit our Applicant Requirements page to ensure you meet our mandatory requirements. Once you are sure you meet those standards, navigate to our Apply Now page to start the process.
Q. How long does the application process usually take?
The application process can take anywhere from 6 to 18 months depending on the needs of the department, the time of year, and the number of applications we receive at a given time.
Q. What level of First Aid/CPR do I need to apply for the AbbyPD?
Any basic/standard first aid course (with CPR) through a certified organization such as the Red Cross or St. John's will do. The CPR certification should include infants.
Q. How do I prepare for the examinations?

Q. What happens if I fail the intake exam?
Requests to rewrite the intake exam will be considered on an individual basis, upon the written request of the applicant.
Q. I wrote Intake Exams with another police department. Are the marks transferable?
Some departments use a similar exam, while others use completely different exams. The only exams that would qualify for transferability would be from agencies that used the same style of exam as the AbbyPD. The recruiter will determine if the exam is transferrable. Tests written outside of one year are not transferable.
Q. I completed the POPAT with another police department. Is my score transferable?
Unfortunately no. We test for the POPAT + 2.4 km run (6 laps around a track). We like to see our candidates in person at this stage and meet them personally.
Q. I had an eye exam completed for another police department. Can I use the same form/results?
Yes. The only requirement is that completion of the eye examination be within the last six months.
Q. I have a criminal record. Does this automatically preclude me from applying?
Yes. You cannot have a criminal conviction for which a pardon has not been granted.
Q. Do I need specialized training before attending the police academy?
No. You will receive the training you need at the police academy.
Q. I have used illegal drugs in the past. Does this preclude me from applying?
Not necessarily. We will examine this on a case-by-case basis. Factors that influence our decision are the type of drug(s) used; the amount/frequency of use; and how recently the drugs were used.
The AbbyPD is committed to hiring the best applicants, but in reviewing applications we consider the whole applicant. We value members who have made mistakes and learned from them. Life experience is an important element of a well-rounded officer. Having made some questionable decisions in the past does not necessarily prevent you from being hired by the AbbyPD.
It is vital, however, that you are completely honest in your application. The application process is rigorous and any omissions will almost certainly come to light during the process. Your honesty will better help us assess your competitiveness as a candidate; failure to include important information could lead to automatic disqualification.
Fees
Q. Are there any costs to apply for a job with AbbyPD?
No. The Abbotsford Police Department does not require applicants to pay for any part of the application process.
Q: How much is tuition at the JIBC?
Tuition for the JIBC Police Academy recruit training is approximately $13,890, and may increase for coming classes. Tuition is the responsibility of the recruit
Q. Is the tuition fee to attend the JIBC tax deductible?
Yes, the JIBC tuition is tax deductible.
Q. When do I have to pay the JIBC tuition fee?
Fees are due on the first day of training at the JIBC Police Academy. You can pay by cheque made out to the Justice Institute of British Columbia, or by credit card.
Q. Can I get a loan for the JIBC tuition?
Yes. The Abbotsford Police Department has made arrangements with local lenders; the tuition fee can be paid out over a maximum of four years (no penalty if paid earlier) at a competitive interest rate. Payments can be deducted off your pay cheque for convenience and paid to the institution directly.
Benefits
Q. After I'm hired, when do I start getting paid?
You start receiving pay on the day you are sworn in.
Q. Am I paid while in training?
Yes. You are paid at the rate of a fifth class constable (also known as recruit constable; see the Salaries and Benefits page).
Q. I currently contribute to a pension plan. Is my pension transferable?
If your current pension plan is transferable, you will start making contributions immediately. If your pension plan is not transferable, or you have not already been contributing to a pension plan, then you must wait a period of six months before starting contributions.
